Psychiatry focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health disorders. Students are taught to assess and manage conditions like depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and mood disorders. The course includes both pharmacological treatments (antidepressants, antipsychotics) and psychotherapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioural therapy. Students are trained in recognizing psychiatric emergencies, including suicidal ideation and acute psychosis. Psychiatry emphasizes a compassionate approach, focusing on reducing stigma and advocating for mental health awareness in communities.
Course Description & Details
At the end of the course, the student should be able to
- Understand the basic principles of mental health, including the classification and diagnosis of common psychiatric disorders.
- Diagnose and manage conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder using appropriate therapeutic interventions.
- Comprehend the importance of psychotherapy, medications, and behavioural interventions in the treatment of mental health disorders.
- Identify and manage psychiatric emergencies, such as suicidality, psychosis, and acute behavioural disturbances.
- Promote mental health awareness, reducing stigma and improving community understanding of mental health issues.
